NEW DEVELOPMENT ~ DECORAH EAGLE'S NEW NEST: The Decorah Eagle parents surprised us and began building a new alternate nest for themselves in October of 2012, which is about 350' from their original nest. This is not uncommon for eagles to do. We announced on February 15, 2013, that the eagles have chosen their new nest to use for raising their family in 2013. We are quite confident that Mom laid her first egg on February 19th, and the first hatch would be expected about March 24th. We do not know for sure there are three eggs in the nest, but since Mom has maintained the same pattern of laying three eggs since 2009, we have no reason to suspect otherwise. We are unable to place cameras in the new nest tree site for this 2013 season as it would pose a serious risk of scaring the eagles away at a critical time for them. There is only one window of time that is safe to install cameras, and that is prior to the eagle parents beginning to prepare their nest for the next nesting season (in the fall). When we change out the cameras each year, it is in the fall prior to them starting to work on their nest, and we have done this each year since 2007 with no reaction from the eagles at all. We are looking into placing cameras at the new nest location for the 2013-2014 season so whichever nest they use, we will be able to see them. Placing cameras involves computer equipment, cables, etc., and it's not possible to place a camera even on the ground near the new nest at this time. The cameras on the original nest are not able to zoom in enough to see anything at their new nest. While we are all disappointed that we are not able to view them for this 2013 season, we are excited for them. The new nest is the first nest that Mom and Dad Decorah have built from scratch together. Dad brought Mom to the original nest in the fall of 2007, but Mom did not help build that nest. Their health and welfare continues to remain the most important aspect in all of this.
