Distance learning is a form of taking Psychology courses other than the traditional way of sitting in a classroom on campus at a specific scheduled time.

So what is distance learning exactly?

Distance learning or distance education is a type of schooling that focuses on students learning while not actually in attendance like in a conventional setting. This is a method created to give a way for students to access the proper learning when the needed class times or the distance to a classroom is not within reach. Distance learning is a course or a program completed solely at home or both classroom and home learning away from the University.

External learning is another term used to refer to distance learning. Distance education, online learning and E-learning are also ways to describe distance learning. It is a unique way of learning where students choose to learn on their own time, at home or wherever they choose with regular guide and support from their instructor who offers a comprehensive feedback on any assignments given. Reading materials get supplied electronically or the traditional textbook will be used depending on the instructors choice. Course activities and assignments get carried via the same channels with little physical contact with the instructor. Phone or e-mail is the way instructors are contacted, and they will lead group tutorials and seminars.

Postage correspondence is how distance education was conducted in the early days. This traditional form of communication was slow and sometimes the message communicated could not reach the intended person in time, resulting in a breakdown of communication. Learning in this time period took a little more time than intended.

Technology has made this type of learning easier. External learning will be completed mostly online, which simply requires a computer with an internet connection. Distance education on some campuses may also be used through cable television. Popular learning technology includes; voice-centered technology such as the use of compact discs, MP3 recordings or even webcasts. Video technology is also used such as instructional videos, DVD's and interactive conferencing to communicate skills and knowledge.

Online learning is beneficial for many reasons. This type of education is convenient because anywhere you have an internet connection and free time you can study and do class work. The biggest reason in choosing to enroll in a distance learning course is the flexibility to take classes at any time of the day. Many students like the opportunity to do as much or as little class work they can handle, as long as the least amount assigned will be done on time. The ability to balance education with all other obligations is great for people with jobs or a family.

A disadvantage of distance education is missing the one on one communication. Students may miss learning by listening to class discussions in a typical classroom. Although distance learning utilizes forums and teacher notes, this type of learning is done mostly independently. Self motivated is what students who try this type of learning must be. It is hard trying to sit in front of a computer at home when there are many distractions around that are normally not present while sitting in a classroom.

Many Universities now offer Psychology courses via distance learning. Creation of Online Universities which only offer distance learning courses has broadened the availability of online degrees. There are multiple options when it comes to Colleges for Psychology, but If you are a student that is looking to study Psychology and don't have the time or are not within distance of a University that offers your chosen concentration of study, distance learning Psychology may be the perfect option.
