Xbox Project Natal - Could This Be the Future of Gaming?
By Dustin Casano

So for those of you who are in the know, and probably more of you who aren\'t, Microsoft has been working on another piece of handy dandy 360 hardware. During the recent annual E3 conference Microsoft revealed it\'s latest project, which in short, blew the minds of just about anyone within range of the stage. Now I know this isn\'t a new idea, I mean the Wii tore a new one in the gaming industry with it\'s revolutionary use of motion sensor gaming capabilities, but Microsoft is claiming to take it to a whole new level.

Wanna know how? Imagine your Wii, now pick up the Wii remote to start your gaming......stop! And throw the remote away.

Welcome to Project Natal.

I know it was only a matter of time before one of the gaming powerhouses out there picked this up, but nonetheless, still hearing about it, and even seeing it blows my mind. To be able to walk up to your Xbox 360 and just stand in front, maybe do a little wave and sign into Xbox Live, pick your game, and start flailing away sounds just too good to be true.

Don\'t believe me?

This new motion sensor device not only allows you to use your body to play your game, no no, that\'s just the beginning, Natal also utilizes voice and facial recognition so you don\'t even have to lift a finger with things like signing into Xbox Live. Natal also offers a scanning system capable of integrating real life items into your game play.

But enough sucking up, let me get to my concerns with this. Even as great as this looks and sounds, I can\'t help but question some key factors in game play with hardware like this:

* Lag response time-I\'m suspicious as to how this system will handle the lag times in motion to game play functionality

* Sensor range-Now I know you shouldn\'t stand 30 feet away to play a game, but if it\'s say a party play setting or even single player, I don\'t want to have to crunch with the gang to play a game, let alone punch my entertainment center every time I try to knock a baddie to the floor in game.

* Game compatibility-As awesome as this hardware is, it leaves me to wonder just how many games are gonna be compatible with it, will there be any backwards compatibility? And of course the concern of the limitations of types of games that will be supported by this product(I don\'t feel like paying god knows how much for this if all I can do is paint a picture or play some 3rd rate sports game). Though be warned, if games like Prototype handle Natal, you might want to think about some home owners insurance just in case facing hordes of zombies causes you to let loose a little too much in your living room.

While there are other concerns on the brain, I think those are some of the more pressing issues with Natal. But for now I\'ll leave it at that and let your brain fondle the concept of the potential of future game play with Natal technology.
