Many people feel that a bachelor's degree in psychology is merely a step in the process of obtaining an advanced degree; however this does not have to be the case. For those people who do not wish to earn an advanced degree, the skills acquired during an undergrad degree in psychology can translate into a variety of satisfying career paths.
Typically, it takes four years to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, though it can vary depending on the rate at which you complete the credit requirement prescribed by your particular institution. On average, it usually takes approximately 124-128 credits to earn a bachelor's degree in psychology.
After the attainment of your undergrad degree, if your goal is to begin working, it can be helpful to make a list the skills you learned while in school. This activity will help you to assess your best qualifications when looking for jobs and also to clarify what your goals are.
A psychology degree will equip you with interpersonal skills that can translate into fields of work that require great communication skills. Marketing, sales, case management, and social service positions are a few fields that require knowledge of how to maintain healthy relationships. Even though you may not be interested in continuing your schooling, there are jobs that will recognize and value the plethora of skills you've harnessed while earning your undergraduate degree.
Since a psychology degree is quite flexible, you can ensure that there will be jobs available in some related field. Though there are many positions available to those holding bachelor's degrees in psychology that are not necessarily closely related to psychology, according to some surveys people with an undergrad degree in psychology can secure a job that is directly related to their field of study.
Different sources of varying types will indicate that the average salary generally offered to a person with a bachelor's in psychology is average to competitive. Those possessing an advanced degree can earn higher wages than those with an undergraduate degree. While there are many options available to people with a bachelor's degree in psychology, some official bureaus indicate that opportunities for those with undergrad degrees will still be more limited than opportunities for those holding advanced degrees.
In short, the work world is welcoming to people who have decided not to earn an advanced master's degree. A bachelor's in psychology equips someone with the skills needed in various career fields, leaving you with plenty of options once you've graduated. While an advanced degree in psychology or a psychology degree online will give you more options, it is not always for everyone and definitely is not a necessity when majoring in psychology.
